LUCY Shock Fans by Canceling Official Lightstick Project Following Heavy Criticism

LUCY Cancels Official Lightstick Production After Fan Backlash

The band LUCY has officially stepped back from its lightstick project. On April 22, their agency Mystic Story released a statement confirming the cancellation after an internal review. The company explained that it had carefully considered the negative feedback circulating across various platforms and ultimately decided to halt production.

A “bone-like” design that missed the mark

Earlier, the agency had revealed the lightstick design, which quickly drew attention for its unusual, bone-like shape. The concept was inspired by the fandom name “Walwal” (which can be interpreted as “wagging” or “shaking” in Korean), aiming to reflect a playful and unique identity.

However, instead of being well received, the design sparked mixed to strongly negative reactions from fans. Many criticized its aesthetic, saying it didn’t match the group’s image or the emotional connection fans expect from an official lightstick. As criticism continued to grow online, the project faced increasing pressure.

Members issue apologies

Following the announcement, the members of LUCY also addressed fans through their communication platform. They expressed regret, admitting they had underestimated the scale of the backlash and promising to be more attentive to fan opinions in the future.

A rare move in the K-pop industry

Canceling an official lightstick after its reveal is quite rare in the K-pop industry, where such merchandise is a major part of a group’s identity and revenue. Lightsticks are more than just accessories—they symbolize the bond between artists and fans, especially during concerts and events.

Now, fans—known as Walwal—are hoping that Mystic Story will return with a redesigned lightstick that better reflects both LUCY’s musical identity and fan expectations.
