SHINee’s Key Questioned as Suspect as Illegal Injection Investigation Expands

The investigation surrounding South Korea’s so-called “Injection Auntie” scandal has taken another significant turn, with SHINee member Key (Kim Ki-bum) reportedly questioned by police as a suspect over possible violations of the country’s Medical Service Act.

According to information released on August 12, 2026, the investigation has expanded beyond Key. YouTuber Ipjjalbeun Haetnim (Kim Mi-kyung) has also been questioned, while several other well-known personalities have been connected to the wider investigation.

Key Was Questioned in July

South Korean police reportedly summoned Key for questioning in early July. Haetnim was questioned separately around the same period.

Being questioned as a suspect means that investigators are formally examining whether an individual may bear legal responsibility. It does not mean that Key has been convicted of a crime or found guilty.

One of the central questions investigators are reportedly examining is whether those who received treatment knew that the woman at the centre of the controversy, identified by the surname Lee, allegedly did not hold a valid medical licence in South Korea.

What Is the “Injection Auntie” Case?

The woman known in Korean media as the “Injection Auntie” is suspected of providing medical treatments without the necessary licence.

Investigators are looking into allegations that she administered intravenous treatments outside conventional medical facilities, including at private residences and other locations. Authorities have also investigated claims involving the provision or prescription of certain medications.

The controversy became a major public issue in late 2025 after several celebrities were linked to treatments allegedly provided by Lee.

The investigation subsequently intensified, with authorities searching locations connected to her and questioning her as part of the case.

Key Previously Acknowledged Receiving Treatment

Key had already addressed his connection to Lee when the controversy first emerged in December 2025.

According to the explanation given at the time by SM Entertainment, Key first met Lee at a medical facility in Gangnam after she was recommended by an acquaintance. He reportedly believed that she was a legitimate medical professional.

Key later received treatments at home when visiting the facility was difficult.

He stated that he only became aware of questions surrounding Lee’s medical credentials after the controversy became public.

Following the scandal, Key apologised to fans and temporarily stepped away from several television activities.

The Investigation Continues

The latest development does not establish Key’s guilt. Police are still reviewing testimony and evidence to determine whether any of the people involved knowingly participated in illegal medical practices.

This distinction is particularly important as the case continues to attract considerable attention both in South Korea and internationally.

Authorities are expected to decide on the next steps after completing their legal review of the evidence gathered during the investigation.

For now, the case remains ongoing, and no final conclusion regarding Key’s legal responsibility has been announced.
